International Meeting “Cultural Sustainable Destinations without Borders"

The International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development marked a turning point in the tourism sector. In 2017, numerous and diverse initiatives were developed within the sector to promote a responsible attitude among all the stakeholders, creating a new concept for understanding tourism and traveling worldwide. Following the spirit of these actions, the International Meeting “Cultural Sustainable Destinations without Borders' will be held in Idanha-a-Velha, Portugal, on the 15th, 16th, and 17th of November 2018 to continue the path taken towards the Tourism Industry’s commitment to sustainable development.

This is a summit aimed at discussing, reflecting and raising awareness of a common policy aimed at non-mass destinations, considering that it could assume the category of alternative destinations.

The aim of the summit is to promote a new approach to tourism: the development of cross-border tourism and the emergence of multi-destination or multi-country travel in the framework of non-mass destinations with the following approaches:

  • Reflection and definition of the concept "Alternative Tourism Destination";
  • Mechanisms of action and regulation focused on sustainability, cooperation, qualification of the destination and its agents;
  • Financing policies adapted to the territories and their agents;
  • Specific management measures adapted towards a responsible and sustainable tourism;
  • Forms of cooperation in the distribution and marketing sector;
  • Referential for the development of public policies and business strategies for alternative tourist destinations on an international scale;
  • A work plan for the creation / consolidation of cross-border areas / destinations.

The International Summit on 'Sustainable Destinations Without Borders" is organized by Aldeias Históricas de Portugal, the Responsible Tourism Institute and Tourism of Portugal and by the Municipality of Idanha-Velha. The event also counts with the institutional support of the State Secretariat of Tourism of the Government of Portugal, UNESCO and GSTC - Global Sustainable Tourism Council, an initiative funded by Portugal 2020, Centro 2020 and by the European Regional Development Fund.

NECSTouR President will also intervene during the event.
