Summer season Figures

-14.3 million tourists,
-6.4 billion euros in consumption
-61% of hotel nights
Between -60% and -80% of frequentation of museums and monuments.

The Paris Region destination recorded 14.3 million less tourists in the first half of 2020 compared to the first half of 2019 and a loss of 6.4 billion euros.

Gradual recovery of the activity (since the opening of borders): it was possible thanks to French costumer and some EU (German, British, Dutch, Spanish).

The tourist frequentation levels during the summer period still remain well below those of "normal" periods, in the order of 50 to 60%. Professionals estimate the loss of their turnover at more than 60% during the months of July and August.

The decrease is more significant for international customers, with a 68% fall in stays in the first half of the year compared to a 54% drop for French customers. In terms of volumes, this represents an almost identical decline of 7 million tourists.

In terms of tourism consumption, the loss of revenue generated by the absence of international tourists is much bigger (- €4.6 billion compared to -1.8 billion for French tourists).

Turnover is clearly decreasing for commercial accommodation. Over the whole of the 1st half of 2020, hotel overnight stays fell by 61% compared to the 1st half of 2019. For seasonal rentals and furnished accommodation, the decline is more moderate (-47%). During the months of June and July, more than one Parisian hotel in two was still closed, while in the Île-de-France region outside Paris, the figures are better, with nearly 70% of hotels open.

Attendance at museums and monuments also fell significantly in the first half of the year, with declines of between 60% and 80%. The Louvre Museum, for example, reported a 64% drop in attendance and the Versailles estate a 77% drop compared to the same period in 2019.
